Simply blacklisting one driver and loading the other one does not work any longer. It connects, with WPA encryption, and it stays connected. I have now tested the ISO image, by doing a fresh install on my computer.

Thank you for your understanding. It must be the driver that’s the problem. Between lucid gjgabyte maverick rt2x00 drivers have become the new default for many devices. This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.
